Nocturne Sweater - Knitting Pattern and Optional Kit

Here is the latest design of Lucila Florencia CastaƱo, the Nocturne Sweater!

This sweater is inspired by the paintings of Tom Thomson, one of Canada’s most influential artists and a key figure in the development of Canadian cultural identity. His work, deeply connected to the landscape, is celebrated for its expressive brushstrokes, distinctive use of colour, and strong sense of texture. In particular, this design draws from Nocturne: The Birches (1916), reinterpreting Thomson’s painterly gestures, colour relationships, and sense of movement through knitting. The colourwork and structure translate his brushstrokes into stitched rhythms, while the use of PETITE BOUCLƉE by Biscotte, a hand-dyed bouclĆ© yarn, enhances the dialogue between painting and textile. Its irregular texture and rich colour reflect the tactile quality of paint on canvas. This sweater is conceived as a wearable painting, where colour and texture come together to create a deeply expressive wearable work. - Lucila Florencia CastaƱo

GAUGE

16 sts x 30 rows = 10cm (4'').

NOTE

This is an advanced-level knitting project worked in multiple construction stages. The sweater is knit bottom-up, primarily flat, and uses intarsia to achieve the final colourwork design. Once the body sections are completed, stitches are joined at the neckline, and the neck is worked in the round using circular needles. The sweater is constructed with raglan shaping. The garment is designed with a very wide body, offering nearly 30 cm of positive ease and a cropped length. In contrast, the sleeves and neckline are worked with less ease, creating subtle anchor points that stabilize the sweater on the body. The resulting proportions create a distinctive silhouette where volume and structure coexist. The sleeves are worked in horizontal stripes, while the front and back of the sweater feature colour changes approximately every 5 rows. Because of this, the body must be worked in intarsia to maintain clean, well-defined colour blocks. The overall intention is for the sweater to function as a wearable painting, wrapping the body in colour, texture, and movement.
